What happens when a woman’s nineteen-year marriage ends at the same time she’s having an existential crisis and finding out that everything she understood about the world may not be true? A personal sexual revolution, of course. Bound and Gagged by Christianity and the Sins that Set Me Free gives you the opportunity to come along with Deborah Besinger on this transformational journey.

When Deborah was nine years old, her idyllic upbringing was transformed overnight by her family's radical conversion to fundamentalist Christianity. Complete with a new set of strict rules and expected lifestyle changes, she found herself in an insular world that would take more than thirty years to escape.

Deborah always had questions. Many of them had to do with how preoccupied the church was with sex and the endless rules they had about it. Despite her own sexual assaults, both within and outside the church, and the tragic compounded losses of her family and son, her personal commitment to love never wavered. However, the unsettling tendency for Christians to blame victims and the brokenhearted, and to mistreat the very sinners they were told to love, left her feeling disconnected from Jesus' Greatest Commandment—to love others—and troubled by the holy-veiled hate she often witnessed.

Deborah was taught that evil existed outside of the safe bubble of church and true believers, yet had rarely experienced life outside the church. Free to discover what she truly believed after the end of her marriage, she went on a journey that enveloped her heart, soul, mind, and body. Compelled to "sin" for herself by diving deep into brief sexual encounters, short sizzling romances, and intimate loving relationships, she became the most authentic expression of herself, and learned along the way that loving herself was the greatest gift of all.

Don't let the title of this book fool you into thinking it's an indictment of Christianity instead of the personal challenge to question why we believe what we believe. We all have the power to redesign our lives any time we choose. This book will resonate with many, and will inspire readers to unbecome the person they thought they should be, and then become who they truly want to be. With a special blend of self-reflection, erotic experiences and discovery of her own soul-honoring values Deborah’s journey brings us full circle to remember there is only one religion that unites all of us; the religion of love.
